SeaWorld Orlando is preparing to turn up the heat and bring on the chill. Less than a year after its grand opening, the park has announced that its Expedition Odyssey flying theater is undergoing a major thematic evolution.
Set to debut later this spring, the attraction will be reimagined as Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice, a high-octane experience that shifts the focus toward the raw, elemental power of the Arctic.
A New Narrative: The Power of the Elements
The refurbishment aims to bridge the gap between the thrill of a high-tech ride and the theme park’s core mission of animal conservation. While the original version of the ride introduced guests to the Mack Rides flying theater platform, Fire and Ice will introduce an entirely new film and a more cohesive storyline.
The new experience will transport guests through the extreme contrasts of the North Pole, from the vast, frozen vistas of the icy Arctic to the glowing, geothermal heat of volcanic regions.
"Expedition Odyssey is telling a story in a way that we've never done before," Jon Peterson, SeaWorld Orlando Park President, told IAAPA News. "It’s storytelling that’s going to bring those worlds together... onto a ride platform that is just incredible."
Enhancing the Wow Factor
Despite the attraction being relatively new, leadership saw an opportunity to push the Mack Rides technology further. According to Justin Newton, Vice President of Project Delivery, the update is not about fixing the ride system, but rather unlocking its full potential.
"It was more about opening up what was always there," Newton explained. "In this film, everything is intentional, like from low water level flights to grand vistas... pairing that with the ride system so you really get the full dynamic motion of it."
The goal is total immersion. Rather than guests feeling like they are sitting in front of a screen, the updated ride profile and visuals are designed to make passengers feel as though they have boarded a high-tech research drone on a mission through the elements.

A More Immersive Arctic Plaza
The changes are not limited to the screen. The exterior of the attraction will receive significant thematic upgrades to better match the Arctic research base aesthetic found in the neighboring animal habitats.
The Expedition Odyssey facility is famously unique, housing beluga whales, walruses, and penguins. The reimagined attraction will feature a revamped indoor queue packed with new props and research equipment, creating a seamless transition from the queue to the ride and into the animal viewing areas.
This move solidifies the park’s Arctic corner as a powerhouse land, joining the Ice Breaker launch coaster and Altitude Burgers to create a fully themed district dedicated to the extremes of the North.
What to Expect
- New Film: High-definition footage showcasing the Fire (volcanoes and geothermal activity) and Ice (glaciers and Arctic tundra).
- Updated Ride Profile: A more dynamic motion sequence synced to the new film.
- Enhanced Theming: A redesigned facade and research-heavy queue line.
- Opening Window: Expected to officially relaunch later this spring.
For fans of SeaWorld Orlando, Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice represents a commitment to evolving attractions quickly to meet guest expectations for deeper storytelling and more immersive environments.
