California’s Great America in Santa Clara, California, will close its doors permanently at the conclusion of its 2027 season, operator Six Flags has announced.
The popular Bay Area theme park will host a dedicated 'Farewell Season' from March 2027 through to its very final day of operation on Labor Day, 6 September 2027.
The announcement marks the end of a landmark attraction that has welcomed tens of millions of visitors over more than five decades.
A Legacy Spanning Over 50 Years
California's Great America originally opened in 1976 as Marriott's Great America, launching as part of the United States Bicentennial celebrations. Across its five-decade history, the 100-acre theme park has become a cornerstone of Northern California entertainment. This includes a high-profile era operating as Paramount's Great America from 1993 to 2006.
Highlighted attractions include Gold Striker, frequently ranked among the top wooden roller coasters in the world, and RailBlazer, a pioneer in single-rail steel coaster design. Guests also hold deep affection for legacy favorites such as the iconic Columbia Carousel at the front entrance, and the classic wooden coaster Grizzly.
The decision to close follows the sale of the park’s land in 2022. The underlying land lease expires in June 2028, and Six Flags opted not to renew the agreement.
"For more than five decades, this Santa Clara theme park has brought people together, created family traditions and served as the backdrop for unforgettable memories," said Dave Vosejpka, park manager of California's Great America. "The Farewell Season is an opportunity for generations of Bay Area guests to return, spend time with family and friends, and revisit the attractions and traditions that have made the park in Santa Clara such a meaningful part of the community."
