In the lead-up to its highly anticipated grand opening, we had the opportunity to visit Universal Epic Universe for a special preview. Spanning five fully immersive themed worlds, and featuring groundbreaking attractions, cutting-edge technology, and bold storytelling, Epic Universe represents a defining new chapter for Universal Orlando Resort.

A New Scale of Ambition

Universal Orlando Resort has never been shy about ambition, but Universal Epic Universe represents something altogether different. Built at a reported cost of approximately $7 billion, and developed by Universal Creative in collaboration with so many external partners, Epic Universe is not just a new theme park — it is a statement of intent.

Located in Orlando, Florida, Epic Universe forms just part of a sprawling 750-acre development, with the theme park itself occupying around 110 acres. Within that footprint, Universal has created five fully immersive themed worlds, connected by bold, cinematic portals designed to transport guests instantly from one universe to another.

During a special preview ahead of the park’s official opening, it quickly became clear that Epic Universe is designed around one core principle: total sensory immersion.

Where the Journey Begins: Universal Helios Grand Hotel

Our Epic Universe experience began not at the park gates, but at the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a striking new property that feels intrinsically linked to the park itself.

The 500-room hotel is adorned with celestial patterns and constellations, a design language that flows seamlessly into Epic Universe’s central hub. One of the hotel’s most significant advantages is its dedicated entrance directly into the theme park, allowing guests with early park admission to walk straight from the hotel into Epic Universe — an effortless and genuinely premium start to the day.

One-of-a-kind park views, a beautifully themed rooftop bar, and a sense that the hotel is part of the story rather than simply accommodation, make Helios Grand Hotel more than just a place to stay a night. Universal clearly intends the Epic Universe experience to begin the moment you step through the hotel’s doors.

A Frictionless Guest Journey

Before even stepping through Epic Universe’s iconic Chronos portal, one thing becomes immediately apparent: Universal has invested heavily in removing friction from the guest experience.

Epic Universe makes extensive use of facial recognition technology, allowing admissions, Univeral Express access, and even locker usage to be activated through a simple facial scan. There is no need to repeatedly present tickets, passes, or payments — the experience feels seamless, intuitive, and refreshingly unobtrusive.

Food and beverage operations are similarly streamlined. The vast majority of dining locations support mobile ordering via Universal’s app, either for table delivery or quick collection. With payment details stored in advance, queues are dramatically reduced, allowing guests to stay immersed in the world around them rather than breaking the spell to manage logistics.

This technology never draws attention to itself — and that’s precisely the point.

Stepping Through the Chronos: Celestial Park

If you're not staying at the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, the moment of stepping through the Chronos portal into Epic Universe is one of the park’s first major “Epic Reveal Moments”. Guests move from a functional, controlled space into the expansive beauty of Celestial Park, where water features, kinetic architecture, and lush landscaping open up in dramatic fashion.

Celestial Park is far more than a transitional hub. Live musicians perform throughout the day, captivating fountain shows bring movement and energy to the space, and the entire area evolves beautifully from day into night. It is here that Epic Universe breathes — and where guests instinctively slow down and take it all in.

Towering above it all is Stardust Racers, the park’s headline thrill attraction and a visual icon for Epic Universe.

Stardust Racers: A Celestial Spectacle

Stardust Racers is a breathtaking dual-launch racing coaster, featuring over 5,000 feet of track and speeds reaching 62 mph. The two intertwining coaster trains soar, dive, and weave around each other in a beautifully choreographed dance, delivering both adrenaline and spectacle in equal measure.

Whether experienced during the day or illuminated against the night sky, Stardust Racers is a triumphant blend of scale, speed, and visual storytelling — and a perfect centrepiece for Celestial Park.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

One of Epic Universe’s most anticipated worlds, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, delivers one of the most powerful reveal moments in the entire park.

Guests step into the streets of 1920s wizarding Paris, where cafés, shopfronts, live street musicians, and spell-casting bring the era to life. Team members speak entirely within theme — farewells of “au revoir” feel natural, not scripted — and the land truly comes alive after dark.

The transition from Paris to the British Ministry via Métro-Floo is nothing short of magical, delivering guests into the heart of Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. The sheer scale of the Ministry interior is astonishing, and stepping inside for the first time left us genuinely speechless. The ride itself is a thrilling motion-based journey through iconic Ministry scenes where guests join Harry, Ron, and Hermione to stop Dolores Umbridge from escaping her trial and causing chaos.

Complementing the main headline attraction is Le Cirque Arcanus, a captivating live show blending illusion, performance, and immersive effects into a magical circus experience that further elevates the land’s storytelling.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

Bursting with colour, movement, and energy, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is precisely as interactive as fans hoped — and then some.

Using Power-Up Bands, guests can complete Key Challenges, collect digital coins, and engage with the environment in a way that feels intuitive and rewarding. The underlying technology — RFID, IR LED, and NFC — is completely invisible, allowing the experience to feel playful rather than technical.

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge delivers fast-paced augmented reality racing alongside Mario and Luigi, while the Mine Cart Madness roller coaster in Donkey Kong Country adds a fun, thrilling, illusion-driven experience. Fueling up at Toadstool Cafe, watching Chef Toad cook while scenes from the Mushroom Kingdom play out, was a delight. However, the culinary highlight was a Donkey Kong Crush Float at The Bubbly Barrel.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Perhaps the most surprising highlight of Epic Universe is How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. It was far larger and more immersive than we expected. Berk is a living village filled with Viking life, towering rockwork, and soaring dragons.

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders offers a joyous, swooping flight experience, while Dragon Racer’s Rally lets guests experience high-flying manoeuvers inspired by Berk’s competitive dragon sports. Character encounters are plentiful, with visits to Gobber’s Forge, the Haddock Paddock, and regular appearances from Hiccup and Toothless. The icy breath of the blue dragon adds a moment of theatrical surprise.

Dining is central to the immersion here, with Mead Hall offering a grand Viking feast experience. The land is also home to The Untrainable Dragon, an outstanding live show featuring large-scale dragon animatronics and a stage production that left audiences visibly moved.

Dark Universe: A Living, Breathing Gothic World

Dark Universe is shrouded in mystery, atmosphere, and some of the most effective environmental storytelling we've seen in a modern theme park.

Dominated by Frankenstein Manor, the village of Darkmoor feels alive — and occasionally unstable. Throughout the detailed land, sudden power surges cause lights to flicker and strange sounds to echo through the streets. These moments are directly tied to the experiments taking place within the Manor, raising the question: is Dr. Victoria Frankenstein on the verge of a breakthrough, or something far more dangerous?

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment takes guests deep into the Manor itself, and is the stand-out attraction of the park, combining classic dark ride storytelling with modern ride technology, to jaw-dropping effect. Curse of the Werewolf delivers a thrilling outdoor coaster experience.

What truly sets Dark Universe apart, however, is its roaming characters. Monster hunters patrol the village, Ygor may stop you with probing questions, and even a casual visit to the (actually burning) Burning Blade Tavern might turn into an unexpected interactive encounter. Dining at Das Stakehaus, surrounded by vampire artefacts above ancient catacombs, further reinforces the sense that this is a place with history — and secrets.

Epic Reveal Moments & Unparalleled Immersion

Epic Universe has been meticulously designed around what we're calling “Epic Reveal Moments”, where each themed portal transitions guests from restricted views into vast, awe-inspiring environments in seconds. These big reveals are consistently effective, drawing audible gasps and visible excitement.

Sound design also plays a crucial role throughout the park, with ambient audio, bespoke musical scores, and live performers instantly setting the tone of each world. Food & beverage, and retail are never bolt-ons; they are integral components of the storytelling, reinforcing time, place, and narrative.

Interactivity extends beyond technology. Costumes, cosplay, and role-play are all encouraged — particularly in the Wizarding World, where cloaked guests blend seamlessly with costumed team members who often play out spontaneous scenes.

Final Thoughts

Universal Epic Universe is not just a new theme park — it is a bold redefinition of what a modern, immersive theme park can be. From frictionless technology and cinematic reveal moments to living worlds filled with character, sound, scale, and story, Epic Universe consistently delivers on its promise.

Visiting during a special preview only reinforced the sense that Universal has created something extraordinary. Epic Universe doesn’t simply invite guests to ride attractions — it invites them to step into entirely new worlds.

And once you do, it’s hard to step back out again. It's time to book your Universal Orlando Resort Tickets.
