Following a playful "moose on the loose" teaser campaign from Rocky Mountain Construction on social media, Lost Island in Iowa has revealed the destination for the highly anticipated coaster concept.

Opening in the summer of 2027, Forbidden Lair will make history as the very first installation of the RMC Wild Moose family coaster model.

Forbidden Lair will operate with a shuttle layout, essentially serving as RMC's unique take on the classic family boomerang coaster but utilising their signature I Box steel track.

Forbidden Lair

Forbidden Lair will be located inside the park's earth themed Yuta realm. It becomes the second roller coaster in this section of the park, joining the launched coaster Matugani. The ride layout features an out and back design that will interact directly with the surrounding park environment.

The experience begins with riders being pulled backwards out of the station and up a 79 foot lift hill. Gravity then takes over, sending the train plummeting forward down an initial airtime drop and tearing back through the station for a high speed fly through.

Riders will then navigate a series of high speed turns before diving into a tunnel known as the "Subterranean Shimmy" routed directly underneath the park's footpaths. Following a junior wave turn, the train will soar over a floater airtime hill positioned right above the Yuta Falls flume ride. Finally, the train climbs a second tower dubbed "Spelunker's Spike" before reversing direction and sending riders backwards through nearly the entire course for a second run.

Ride Statistics

Despite being categorised as a family coaster, Forbidden Lair packs a significant punch.

  • Height: 79 feet
  • Track Length: 910 feet of I Box steel track
  • Top Speed: 38 mph
  • Airtime: 11 distinct moments of weightlessness

A Second RMC

For Lost Island, this addition serves a vital role in their attraction line up. As the park's fifth roller coaster, it provides a perfect intermediate step for younger guests. It beautifully bridges the gap between the park's smaller Lokolo children's coaster and their three intense thrill coasters: Nopuko, Matugani, and the single rail RMC Fire Runner added in 2025.

For RMC, a company that built its industry leading reputation on ultra intense hybrid coasters, Forbidden Lair marks an ambitious first foray into the family coaster market. If the animated concept is anything to go by, they are bringing their trademark focus on airtime and custom layouts right along with them.

While an exact opening date has not yet been set for the summer of 2027, Forbidden Lair is already cementing the young Iowa destination as a must visit park for coaster fans across the globe.
