The curtain has officially risen on Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare, a brand new interactive dark ride adventure at Kings Island.

Developed in collaboration with Sally Dark Rides, the attraction officially opened to the public on 18 April 2026. The ride serves as a spiritual successor to the original Phantom Theater that operated at the park between 1992 and 2002.

This reimagined version occupies the building formerly used by Boo Blasters on Boo Hill, replacing the previous shooting attraction with a more immersive, story driven experience.

A Ghostly Challenge

The narrative begins on a dark and stormy night during the grand reopening of the theatre. As a performance by Maestro, the resident organist, is about to begin, a lightning strike hits the building. This surge of energy releases the ghost notes, which are mischievous musical spirits, from Maestro's pipe organ. These spirits quickly scatter throughout the theatre, causing chaos backstage.

Guests are recruited by the legendary head usher, No Legs Larry, to join his team and save the show. Boarding enchanted opera boxes and armed with interactive spellbound flashlights, riders must journey through the theatre to capture the ghost notes and return them to the organ before the performance is ruined.

Familiar Faces and New Surprises

The ride features 26 interactive scenes that take guests through fully built dimensional environments. Riders travel through haunted hallways, magical dressing rooms, and a fiery boiler room. Along the way, the theatre's iconic vaudeville stars return in animatronic form, including:

  • Houdelini
  • The Great Garbanzo
  • Hilda Bovine
  • Lionel Burymore

The experience is enhanced with multi-sensory effects such as wind and the sound of shattering mirrors. Guests will also meet Arpeggio, the new feline companion of Maestro, before the journey concludes with a grand on-stage musical finale featuring the entire cast.

Innovative Technology

The attraction introduces a world debut for a brand new shooter targeting system from Sally Dark Rides. Unlike traditional infrared guns, the "spellbound" flashlights interact with 100% projected targets. This allows for a more flexible experience where the park can easily update the targets for seasonal events. With 37 new animatronics and detailed scenic design, the ride moves away from the flat cutouts of the past to offer a high level of immersion.
