SeaWorld have announced new enhancements to its popular park mobile apps, available for iPhone and Android devices. The SeaWorld Discovery Guide mobile app offers new features for a more personalized and interactive experience during a park visit, and can be downloaded free from the Apple or Google Play app stores.

Each park’s Discovery Guide app will save guests time and increase their enjoyment as they navigate through the park using GPS-enabled interactive maps, access real-time updates of show schedules and events and receive broadcast park notifications. These combined features are unique to the theme park industry and address the desires of today’s connected customer.

“This announcement is part of our larger focus on guest innovation and the important role that mobile and social media plays in the travel planning process” said Jim Atchison, President and Chief Executive Officer for SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. “We designed these apps based on consumer insights and mobile best practices to give our guests a premier user experience while still allowing us to invest our dollars efficiently.”

The multi-year focus on digital innovation includes the recent introduction of mobile ticketing and responsive Web design, among the first in the theme park industry. The investments go beyond new technology, but also extend to park operations for a guest experience that is more interactive and connected.

SeaWorld worked with TE2 (The Experience Engine Inc.) as the platform provider to power the app for a personalized digital in-park experience using feedback from park guests and users of previous versions of park apps. Insights from consumer trends and mobile technology leaders guided the development of new enhancements in three key areas: increased utility, easy purchasing and social gaming.

Features include:

  • Planning: Up-to-the-minute ride wait times and show times, ride-height filters, car finder function and insider park tips help make the most out of a visit. The interactive map provides a walking path showing clear starting and ending points with estimated walking time.
  • Easy purchasing and upgrades: This summer, a mobile wallet will be added with one-touch purchasing. This allows guests to make spur-of-the-moment upgrades to skip lines with Quick Queue or add the All-Day Dining Deal. Later this year, new functionality will even allow guests to pre-order meals on the go for easy pick up at select locations.
  • Push notifications: Starting next month, guests inside the park will be alerted automatically on their mobile device with offers and discounts only for app users, such as tours or culinary specials. In future releases, guests will receive contextual notifications, based on interests particular to each guest.
  • Gaming: The 50th Celebration Scavenger Hunt follows a growing trend in gaming and is available at all three SeaWorld parks. Guests collect badges as they visit locations throughout the park to earn valuable in-park rewards. New games for additional parks will be added in 2014.
  • Sharing: Fun photo frames used to showcase photos taken in the parks can be easily shared on social channels.

The new mobile app offers a more personalized and interactive approach using technology that’s easy to access from a device guests already use every day.

“Guests are interacting with their smartphone throughout the day” said Darla Morse, Chief Information Officer. “Our goal was to ‘put the park in your pocket,’ using a device they are already familiar with and comfortable using. These new apps are powered by the TE2 platform that scales across our 11 parks and is tied into our existing operational systems which ensures the guest will get a seamless experience.”

Mobile app users will be automatically notified to upgrade to the new Discovery Guide when more new features are launched throughout the year.

SeaWorld has launched a multi-park celebration to commemorate a key event in the company’s history. The original SeaWorld Park opened its gates for the first time in March 1964 on Mission Bay in San Diego. SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration features a Sea of Surprises throughout an 18-month celebration highlighting some of the most memorable SeaWorld experiences in San Diego, Orlando and San Antonio.

For nearly five decades, SeaWorld has surprised and amazed guests with unique entertainment, thrilling rides and up-close encounters with animals. During SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration visitors will be invited to take part in the excitement through new interactive experiences, shows and pathway performances, even more up-close animal encounters throughout the park and “The SeaWorld Surprise Squad” treating guests with prizes every day.

SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration Sea of Surprises Highlights

  • SeaWorld San Diego will celebrate 50 years by completely transforming the park’s arrival experience. Explorer’s Reef will open in March for the celebration kick-off, and immediately immerse park guests into an undersea oasis. From the moment they enter the park, guests can connect with the sea through multiple touch pools featuring shark pups, rays, skates and delicate little cleaner fish
  • SeaWorld is known for amazing entertainment and each park will have something new for the 50th celebration. Kicking off on March 21, Park pathways will come to life with spontaneous entertainment. “Bubble Blowout” is sure to be a guest favorite with a fantastical vehicle creating bubbles of all sizes and shapes. Engaging performances with sea-inspired costumes and props will pop up at unexpected moments to surprise guests throughout the day, like “Splash Dance” and the “Sea Street Band.”
  • Starting this summer, new shows offer guests the chance to celebrate the longer park hours. “Shamu’s Celebration: Light Up The Night” is a nighttime Shamu Show debuting at all three SeaWorld parks. The high energy show will include new, original music and production elements, as well as new killer whale behaviors. SeaWorld San Antonio will also launch a new 50th-Celebration-themed ski show for the summer season.
  • The “SeaWorld® Surprise Squad” will roam the SeaWorld parks on a daily basis giving away prizes and special gifts, including exclusive access to rides, behind-the-scenes experiences, Shamu-themed merchandise, reserved show seating and more.
  • SeaWorld guests are often greeted by an animal ambassador, many of whom were orphaned or injured in the wild and given a second chance thanks to the SeaWorld Rescue Team. As part of SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration, there will be more surprise encounters with animal ambassadors throughout the day. A pair of Magellanic penguins, a lemur, or even a parade of flamingos could surprise guests at any moment at all three SeaWorld locations.
  • To showcase SeaWorld’s commitment to the environment and passion for protecting the ocean, a series of giant sea life sculptures will be displayed throughout the parks. SeaWorld commissioned environmental art group The Washed Ashore Project for a collection of larger-than-life sea-themed sculptures – many weighing more than half a ton. The material used to create these pieces comes from the billions of pounds of garbage – mostly plastics – that wind up in our oceans. These amazing works of art point to the urgent need to protect marine animals from such dangers and preserve their ocean habitats.
  • As part of its continuing commitment to new technology that enhances the guest experience, SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration will include new ways for fans to connect to the parks and each other though digital devices. The parks will be launching a variety of enhancements, from interactive apps that provide fun new ways to experience the park to new games and video content.

On Saturday, June 8, three all-new shows will debut at SeaWorld San Antonio as the park begins its annual “Summer Nights” series.

The highly anticipated show, Pets Ahoy, features the talents of four-legged stars that will have the whole family laughing from beginning to end. Dogs, cats, birds, rats, pot-belly pigs and a few surprise animal guest stars will demonstrate SeaWorld encouragement-based training techniques. Guests can see the wonderful connections that happen when animal trainers turn their attention toward animals that aren’t quite from the sea! Most impressive is the fact that nearly all of these animals have been rescued from animal shelters.

During the new “Island Nights” at Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark, guests can enjoy a taste of the islands in South Texas. “Island Nights” will feature live music, exhilarating entertainment and Polynesian dancers. “Island Nights” will be included with SeaWorld/Aquatica admission. Plus, guests also can purchase exclusive island-inspired cuisine and beverages.

SeaWorld’s “Summer Nights” series heats up with a brand-new finale show – Sol Celebration. Singers, dancers and musicians will burn the floor with their Latin-inspired dance moves, screamin’ trumpets and elaborate costumes the whole family will enjoy. This new show will take place every summer night under SeaWorld’s signature arches.

Returning seasonal favorites include:

Elmo Rocks, the family-friendly Sesame Street® show, where guests can dance and sing along with all their favorite Sesame Street friends.
Cool Vibrations, a fast-paced, high-energy water ski show that includes daredevil stunts, graceful moves and superior boat driving.
Sea Lions Tonite, starring Clyde and Seamore, who are back with pranks and spoofs funnier than ever.
Shamu Rocks!, a crowd rockin’, electrifying show featuring world-famous killer whale, Shamu.

Starting June 8, both parks will have extended hours that keep them open as late as 10 p.m., making Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark, open later than any other San Antonio area waterpark. That means that with opening times of 10 a.m., guests can enjoy up to an additional five hours of fun than any other area park.

SeaWorld will feature a spectacular fireworks display celebrating Independence Day on July 4, 5 and 6.
